FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
April 3, 2025

SANTA FE—April is Child Abuse Prevention Month nationally, and across New Mexico, the Children, Youth, and Families Department (CYFD) is calling attention to programs, services, and support systems that are designed to improve the safety and well-being of the children and youth in our state.

“CYFD’s Family Services Division focuses on supporting families to prevent abuse and neglect,” said CYFD Secretary Teresa Casados. “Through family-centered programs and partnerships with service providers, CYFD aims to give families the tools and supports they need so they don’t fall into crisis.”

The Family Services Division (FSD) is comprised of programs that focus on prevention and early intervention strategies aimed at reducing risk factors and emphasizing proactive support for families instead of reactive measures.

Community-Based Prevention, Intervention & Reunification:
This multifaceted, community-based program provides case management services and parenting education. The program offers different levels of support for families based on the needs identified by the family during its family assessment.

Family Outreach:
This is the first level of a multi-level response, offering a family-centered approach that recognizes each family’s unique strengths and needs. Once the family assessment is completed, the family is connected and introduced to a community provider who helps obtain the identified resources needed. This program also accepts self-referrals.

Family Resource Centers:
These community-based resource hubs are designed to provide families with access to services and support that promote their health and well-being. Each resource center aids families in connecting with needed programs and services, educational support, and assistance accessing state-administered services. View location information and hours of Family Resource Centers here.

Keeping Families Together:
The Keeping Families Together program provides various services to families facing homelessness or unstable housing. It helps eligible families find stable housing while offering intensive case management support. Currently, the program operates in Bernalillo and Chaves counties.

Activities for Child Abuse Prevention Month are taking place across the state throughout April.  A full list of CYFD-supported events in the month can be found here.
